Greenock Morton 5 Alloa Athletic 2
Jamie Stevenson forced David McGurn into an early full-stretch save with a curling free-kick as Alloa sought the first advantage. 'Ton, however, were soon in constant attacking mode, and Peter Weatherson rehearsed the opening goal with a low drive which swept wide.
Kevin Finlayson provided the eager Weatherson with a neat lay-back and Gary McGlynn was beaten by a low, angular shot from the edge of the box. Chris Templeman should have made it two when Chris Townsley completely missed a low cross from Weatherson, but the tall striker blasted straight at McGlynn.
Having lost Ross Hamilton with an early knock, Alloa contributed little in attack and Morton fully deserved their second when Alex Walker - outstanding throughout - picked up the ball 30 yards out and fired a spectacular shot past McGlynn. Jim McAlister then brought out the best in McGlynn after a thrilling run and shot.
Alloa profited from Ryan Harding's failure to deal with the tenacity of Jose Quitongo, who sent in Andy Brown whose calmly-struck shot beat McGurn.
'Ton reasserted themselves and, after a wonderful combination between Kevin Finlayson and Andy McLaren, Templeman headed in the latter's cross.
Finlayson beat McGlynn with a low shot and Chris Millar outmuscled Townsley before slotting in number five with a neat finish.
David McGregor brought down the ever-dangerous Stevenson in the penalty area and McGurn was comfortably beaten by Stevenson's resultant kick.
