Peterhead's forwards looked lively from the start, but it was their goalkeeper, Paul Mathers, who looked world class when he dived low to his right to turn aside a searing drive from Peter Weatherson after Andy McLaren had rolled on a free-kick .

Peterhead's Bobby Linn rounded keeper David McGurn near the corner and his cross was perfect for Graeme Sharp, but Kevin Finlayson did enough to ensure the header found the side netting.

After 20 minutes Peterhead's Calvin Shand dithered in his penalty area and Weatherson cracked a firm left-footed drive against a post from 12 yards.

Martin Wood forced McGurn into action with a straight drive and, after the home side failed to clear a corner, Linn forced the 'keeper into a vital low save.

Graeme Sharp was denied by the busy McGurn, but Derek Lilley missed a good chance when Chris Millar turned back a Weatherson headed cross. Millar fired in a powerful low shot which took a deflection, forcing Mathers to save awkwardly.

Ten minutes from half-time Weatherson picked up a loose ball 30 yards out and let fly a spectacular shot which, to the striker's mortification, rebounded from the post. Linn cursed the other frame soon after, his glancing header skimming the top of the bar.

The Blue Toon were the more dangerous after the break. Linn headed over and Keith Gibson headed a clear chance wide. Linn lobbed another chance over and it became obvious that 0-0 was the inevitable outcome, 'Ton having failed to impose any superiority over their visitors.
