Stalwart defender Stuart Greacen today added twelve months to his existing contract, pledging his future to the Cappielow side until June 2006.
The ex-Forfar and Livingston stopper, who was one of the few bright lights in a dark season for the Morton defence, will hope to repeat his pre-Christmas heroics this time around, and to find the consistency to last the whole season. Following a ligament injury against South of Scotland side Vale of Leithen in December, he struggled to recapture his excellent form, and could only struggle alongside the rest of the team as they began their slide down the table.
Perhaps the addition of Stuart McCluskey to the squad will see him moved to a full-back position, or maybe played alongside the new addition in the central defensive line. Regardless of where Big Stu plays, fans will undoubtedly relish his hard-working attitude and aerial presence.
This latter part of his game also suffered towards the end of last season, with opposing teams easily spotting him as one of the few good headers of the ball in a diminutive Morton squad. Following a string of goals headed in from set pieces, managers such as Tom Hendrie and Alan Maitland swiftly acted and had him man or even double-man marked from corners or free kicks. Even so, his height and sense of timing were not entirely wasted, with many defensive clearances to his credit.
Greacen puts pen to paper at a time when Morton supremo DDF Rae and manager John McCormack are allegedly seeking new additions to a squad weakened by inconsistency and contractual releases. It remains to be seen where, or with whom, Greacen will fit into next season's first eleven.
