Within the last hour, Morton chairman DDF Rae confirmed on MortonUnofficial that the much-anticipated re-signing of Alan Mahood had been confirmed and finalised. The veteran midfielder comes back to Cappielow for his third spell at the club. He has also served Nottingham Forest, his boyhood local club Kilmarnock and - most recently, St. Johnstone.
The Perth club were reportedly paying high wages to Mahood, but their investment was deemed unsound as he made only four first team starts and three appearances as a substitute. Recent reserve appearances caught the eye of 'Ton boss Jim McInally (see here), and with Saints boss John Connolly well known for signing and releasing many players in a quest to find the perfect line-up, the conditions were right for Mahood to leave McDiarmid Park and come back to Greenock.
It seems that Mahood is not "SFL wild card" transfer, which is to say he does not count one of a limited number of signings allowed during the period of the closed transfer window. InverclydeNow reports that he was released from St. Johnstone before signing for Morton, so he does not count as a transferred player, merely a signed free agent. Additionally, it appears that the player is not cup-tied, having taken no part in Saintees' 3-2 reversal against Alloa in the CIS Insurance League cup, nor in their Bell's Challenge Cup campaign which saw them lose in the semi-final against Falkirk.
Over the coming days, I'll see about preparing a brief retrospective on Mahood's career. A sort of "Where Are They Now?", only with a really obvious answer. Don't say I'm not good to you.
